Ganesha or Ganapati is the destroyer of all obstacles, both spiritual and material. He is one of the most popular and revered gods in Hinduism, and his mantra is recited daily by millions of people. Ganapati is worshipped not only at the beginning of tantric work but also before any important project or activity. For example, when attending a job interview, embarking on a journey, starting a new business, etc.

His worship is even recommended upon waking up each morning to ensure the day runs smoothly. Similarly, the ritual of Lord Ganesha is essential when beginning tantra, to increase the chances of success in all tantric practices. This ritual can begin on Ganesh Chaturthi, the day dedicated to Lord Ganesha, or it can also begin on any Wednesday during the waxing moon (Shukla Paksha).

On the day of the ritual, the practitioner should wake up very early, before sunrise, bathe, and wait for the ritual time without touching anyone. Then he should prepare the room where the ritual will be performed. That room should be cleaned and all unnecessary objects should be removed from there except those that are needed for the ritual.

Starting at 9:00 p.m., the practitioner should dress, tying only a red garment around the waist—Ganapati’s favorite color—and then place a wooden stool facing north or east. Cover the stool with a fresh red cloth and place the idol or a framed photo of Lord Ganesha on top.

Place red flowers on a bronze plate and some fresh fruits, such as apples and bananas, in front of the idol. Also placed on the plate is a halved coconut, representing Ganesha’s most precious offering. An oil or ghee lamp should then be lit to the right of the offerings, and incense sticks to the left.

Sukhasana, also known as the “easy pose”

Now the practitioner should sit on a red cotton mat in the Sukhasana or Padmasana position in front of the altar, pour water into his right palm and pronounce the following resolution:

“I (full name), son of (father’s name), am beginning this worship to please  Lord Ganesha  in order to obtain success in all my projects, both spiritual and material. Therefore, I undertake to chant 21 rosaries of his mantra for seven days.”

Afterwards, the water should be poured on the ground and the following Ganapati mantra should be recited 21 rosaries, using a Rudraksha or red sandalwood rosary (both can be found on Amazon):

Om Gam Ganpataye Namaha

ॐ गं गणपतये नम:

Rudraksha rosary

Red sandalwood rosary

After completing the 21 rosaries, the practitioner should pray to Lord Ganesha asking him to accept the worship for that day and forgive him for any mistakes he may have committed during the worship. Then the practitioner should hang the rosary around their neck and meditate for at least ten minutes. After that he should bow before the altar.

For the next seven days, the practitioner should continue reciting the 21 rosaries at the same time, in the same place, and facing the same direction. It is not necessary to repeat the resolution, as it is only performed at the beginning of the ritual. Nor is it necessary to offer the split coconut again. But red flowers must be offered every single day. The remains of the daily offerings should be kept in a safe place daily and immersed in a river or buried in a forest or desolate place.

Finally, once the formal Ganesha ritual has been performed, the practitioner will simply recite a Ganapati rosary at the beginning of each tantric ritual, upon awakening in the morning, or at any other time deemed appropriate or necessary. Offering red flowers, incense, and a candle before the Ganesha idol from time to time is recommended to continue receiving his blessings. Chanting a rosary of his mantra while staring a ritual is very important to remove any obstacle that may interfere in the ritual.
