Description

This is a very simple Vaudou ritual to summon the water spirits, known as Mami Wata in West Africa, where the worship of these spiritual entities is widespread. Mami Wata spirits are a large group of female entities of aquatic origin, which is why they are generally described as women with fish tails, similar to Western mermaids.

In fact, Mami Wata and Western mermaids are exactly the same group of entities, given different names depending on geographic location and culture. Likewise, the rituals used to summon them vary, depending on local religions and beliefs. But not only do the rituals and names vary depending on geographic location, but so do the physical appearance of these spiritual entities.

For example, in Hindu tradition, where they are known as Jal Pari (water fairies), they appear with an appearance similar to Indian maidens. In China, they are known as Shui Xian (water immortals), and their features are generally Chinese. In West Africa, where their name is Mami Wata, their appearance is usually that of a young African girl, while in the West, where they have various names such as Ondines, Nereids, or simply mermaids, they more closely resemble Western girls.

But whatever the location and the culture, those entities are described in the same way, as superhuman beauty maidens with a fishtail instead of legs. Something very important to point out in this regard is that these water entities may have a fish tail in the water, but in all their interactions with humans they usually appear with a pair of legs exactly like ordinary women.

Another very important point to keep in mind is that these water entities constitute a broad group, all of them under the name of Mami Wata, as already noted, but they are actually divided into different categories. The three most important categories are: the fairies or water nymphs, which we have already described. The next group is composed of serpentine entities, known in Vaudou as Simbi, in Hinduism as Nagini, or Jiao in Chinese culture.

They are generally depicted with the upper half in human form and the lower half in the form of a serpent. Sometimes they appear completely as serpents, whether small like cobras, medium-sized like pythons, or enormous like anacondas, but they are perfectly capable of taking on any human form they please and changing from human to serpent at will. They are usually more dangerous than the first group but more benevolent than the next one.

The third group consists of the souls of people who died in water. These souls will remain there until they can be reincarnated or move on to the next stage of their spiritual journey. The souls of drowned deceased who find themselves in this state are known in Hindu tradition as Jal Pishachini and in Chinese culture as Shui Gui, or water ghosts. Their nature is often entirely tamasic (they enjoy meat and liquor) and their character unpredictable.

The reason I’m highlighting these three groups is because I want practitioners to know what they’re up against when they begin summoning water spirits. I also feel it’s necessary to clarify certain doubts and misinformation that have arisen regarding water entities, due to information distributed by individuals with little or no knowledge of the subject. This information has contributed to a chaotic confusion that contributes to the uninitiated having a misconception about entities like Mami Wata.
